On this day in February 1959, Buddy Holly and fellow entertainers Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, lost their lives in a plane crash after a performance at the Surf Ballroom.
While this day will forever be seen as one of the most tragic days in rock ‘n’ roll history, Buddy’s legacy lives on even 50 years after his death. Paul McCartney once said that without Buddy Holly and the Crickets, there never would have been The Beatles. Talk about a ripple effect.
As the home of Buddy Holly, we are blessed every day by his memory. The Buddy Holly Center is still one of the best places to see in town and continues to attract fans from all over the world. One of our most memorable experiences was when we hosted Greg Wilkes, who came to Lubbock all the way from Rockhampton, Australia. Here’s a blog and a video that detailed his trip.
In memory of Buddy Holly and his everlasting spirit, we’ll leave you with two words:
Rave On!
