Named after Lubbock native and iconic rock n’ roll legend Buddy Holly, this avenue in the downtown Depot District is lined with activities perfect for a progressive night out. From scenes that honor the city’s music history to internationally inspired cuisine, there’s a curated experience around every corner.

During your next visit to Lubbock, spend an afternoon and evening exploring these hidden gems. Designed to show you the best of Buddy Holly Ave. and the Depot District, add this one-night itinerary to your plans.

Itinerary

3:30 p.m. Snap a picture with the Buddy Holly Statue

You can’t spend the evening on Buddy Holly Ave. without snapping a photo with its namesake himself. This statue, bronze and lifelike, was completed by sculptor Grant Speed in 1980. Today, it sits surrounded by the West Texas Walk of Fame. Stop by for a quick picture or stay a while to browse the tiles of other iconic musicians.

🚶6 minute walk

4 p.m. Wine Tasting & Tour at McPherson Cellars

Lubbock grows 85% of Texas’ wine crop, and The McPherson family have been pioneers in the grape growing and winemaking industry for generations. Owner and Winemaker Kim McPherson has beautifully restored the historic Coca-Cola Bottling Plant into a world-class winery, winning over 600 awards in state, national and international competitions. Tours and tastings are offered noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.

🚶1 minute walk

6 p.m. Dinner at La Diosa

Dine directly across the street from McPherson Cellars at La Diosa. Owned and operated by Kim McPherson’s wife, try the restaurant’s exclusive sangria. This eclectic tapas bar serves internationally-inspired fare and offers a unique dining experience.

🚶3 minute walk

7:30 p.m. Catch a Show at the Iconic
Cactus Theater

The very first neighborhood movie theater in 1938, the Cactus Theater is now a downtown staple featuring performances from touring artists, tribute bands and local talent. Check out the current lineup and plan your night at the historic Cactus!

🚶1 minute walk

9:30 p.m. Dance and Enjoy Live Music at The Blue Light Live

If you love country music and dancing all night long, then you need to head straight to the Blue Light Live after your show at the Cactus Theater ends. Lucky for you, it’s right next door. But if you need a quick bite first, run inside Triple J Chophouse & Brew Co. for the Cactus Queso or Choppy Bob Nachos— yum! The perfect fuel for the last few hours of the evening.

🚶2 minute walk

11:30 p.m. Night Cap at Bodine’s or Shotgun Sue’s Saloon

End the night with an elevated bar experience at one of the Depot District’s newest additions. From an Old West-inspired feel to innovative craft cocktails, Shotgun Sue’s Saloon is for those ready to be transported back in time. A moody and classic aesthetic, Bodine’s Cocktail Parlor offers a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere that draws in a crowd every weekend. Take your pick knowing you can’t go wrong with either!
