From Broadway to Broadway: Lubbock’s Unique Winter Escape

Leave it to the birthplace of Buddy Holly to create a lively entertainment scene that says “take that” to the winter blues. Blending signature High Plains culture with big city fun, Lubbock attracts visitors with its vibrant mix of arts, shopping, dining, and other cultural activities. From Broadway shows at The Buddy Holly Hall to downtown’s Broadway Street, Lubbock delivers a bright-lights-big-city vibe with a Texas-sized smile.

Experience Broadway in Lubbock at The Buddy Holly Hall

There’s no need to hit the Big Apple when Lubbock offers dazzling Broadway shows every year at its premier Buddy Holly Hall. The 2025-2026 Broadway Season begins in January with Water for Elephants, the story of a dispirited young man whose life changes forever when he jumps a train with a traveling circus. The spectacle-filled show has been called a “gorgeously imaginative Broadway musical.”

Come February, catch Mrs. Doubtfire, the beloved and zany story of a divorced dad-turned-English nanny desperate to spend time with his kids. March brings the highly anticipated The Blue Man Group, an immersive live music and comedy show where the patented blue performers demonstrate the common ground between us all.

Hadestown hits the stage in April when it weaves a story of love and hope against a backdrop that blends the Depression with a mythological underworld. The fun continues in May with Clue and its perpetual game of whodunnit. Was it Colonel Mustard with the knife in the study, perhaps? Lubbock’s Broadway season wraps in June with Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, the energetic story of a smooth-talking salesman attempting to swindle the good people of River City, Iowa with the promise of a new marching band.

The Buddy Holly Hall’s Broadway series features both evening and daytime performances in its state-of-the-art, 2,100-seat Helen McDevitt Jones Theater. It’s possible to upgrade the experience with reserved parking, exclusive lounges, and private suites.

Hit Broadway Street and Explore Charming Bars, Restaurants, and Attractions

Brick-lined Broadway Street is one of Lubbock’s hottest spots. The thoroughfare, which connects Texas Tech University to downtown Lubbock, is lined with an array of restaurants, bars, and other attractions.

Savor an unmatched culinary scene with restaurants like The Nicolett, a James Beard Award semifinalist and named one of Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants in America. Its innovative menu offers an elegant, modern take on southwestern ingredients. Diners also love The West Table, an upscale haven featuring new American cuisine with seasonal global flourishes.

The craft beverage scene is big in Lubbock with unique experiences on Broadway like Mano Negra Brewing Co., the only Latin-owned nano brewery in the area. Serving ales, sangria, creative non-alcoholic drinks, and more, Mano Negra is not only a place to go for boutique beverages, but also good times. Regular themed nights feature trivia, comedy, Latin dancing, and salsa lessons. For those who “Live Love Beer” and also “Live Love Lubbock,” head on over to The Brewery LBK, routinely named among the top brewpubs in the country with its eclectic mix of craft beers on draft and tasty menu of artisan pub grub.

For live music and laid-back fun, take a seat at Midnight Shift Restaurant and Bar inside the Cotton Court Hotel. The menu satisfies with all-day breakfast, as well as savory pies, generous burgers, and more. Another neighborhood favorite is family-owned Nashwell Café, where a menu of sweet and savory baked goods is inspired by the cuisine of Australia. From sausage rolls and jalapeno muffins to pumpkin scones and lemon tarts, the menu is a tasty roundup of lip-smacking homemade treats.

Don’t Forget “Off Broadway” Fun!

Step off the main drag to take in even more downtown Lubbock fun. One block over on 13th Street, enjoy carefully crafted southern favorites at Dirk’s Signature Chicken + Bar, known for “birds, beef, bubbles, and beer.” The spot is named for late Lubbock cartoonist, Dirk West. His grandson, Cameron West, serves as head chef. Chicken of all sorts anchors the menu, from fried like your mama’s to Korean-style glazed.

For farm-to-table favorites, head over to Claraboya Scratch Chicken + Bar on Avenue Q. Located inside the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel, the spot serves seasonal favorites with local ingredients. You can catch live music here, too!

Enjoy Overnight Accommodations at the Boutique Cotton Court Hotel

A must-experience along Broadway Street is the eclectic Cotton Court Hotel, the place to be for a boutique stay. Soak in the culture of old Lubbock in this design-forward spot, which used to be a cotton warehouse. Spot cotton botanical motifs, along with other retro design touches, from exposed wire sconces to Smeg refrigerators in guest rooms. Those fridges are well stocked with beverages of all kinds, perfect for washing down the basket of local snacks that also come with every room. Upon arrival, enjoy complimentary beer and s’mores for roasting over the open fire in the courtyard. Soaring ceilings, natural light, and Texas design touches create a feeling of stylish eclecticism. The Cotton Court Hotel is just the right place to cozy up over a chilly weekend.
