This summer, consider planning a road trip across the Lone Star State to Lubbock, Texas this fall. The five-hour drive from Dallas and six-hour drive from Austin offers beautiful views that will bring forth unforgettable memories – and that is just the beginning. With a far-reaching backyard to explore, wine festivals to attend and new attractions, Lubbock is the ideal destination to make your trek out west.

While on the road, immerse yourself in the expansive country that surrounds the Texas High Plains region. With nearly a dozen nearby canyons and lakes, visitors will find hundreds of miles dedicated to hiking, mountain biking and water sports. Each outdoor adventure is filled with both adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities alike.

Just north of the “Hub City”, travelers are greeted by Caprock Canyon State Park. This nature lover’s dreamland with 90 miles of trail coupled by the 120-surface acres that make up Lake Theo. This canyon is perfect for camping, exploring on foot, bike or horseback, geocaching, no-wake boating and other water sports. Here you will find yourself marveling in the wonders of the desert landscape, roaming bison and the stillness of the water.

Lubbock’s backyard isn’t only filled with red rock canyons! In fact, as the leading producer of wine grapes in Texas, vineyards across the Texas High Plains AVA grow 90% of all wine grapes in the state. As you plan your trip this fall, keep the annual Uncorked Festival in mind. On November 7, wine lovers around the state will gather at the American Windmill Museum to celebrate the culture of grape-growing and winemaking in West Texas. Local and statewide wineries including English Newsom Cellars and Burklee Hill Vineyards will debut recent creations of reds, whites and blends. Attendees will take part in wine tastings, live music and local food trucks. This is an event you don’t want to miss.

While here, add the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences to the itinerary. This world-class theater is scheduled to bring Broadway shows like Hamilton, headlining performances from nationally acclaimed artists and ballet performances by Ballet Lubbock. The 2,200 seats, acoustic rating NC-15 theater is complemented by a smaller theater, cafe and event space.

As you continue to explore Lubbock’s cultural arts scene and agricultural roots, book your stay at the Cotton Court Hotel, Lubbock’s newest boutique hotel. Grape growing isn’t the only branch of agriculture the “Hub City” is known for. This premier hotel is designed to replicate a 19th-century cotton gin that serviced the city’s agricultural industry. Located in downtown Lubbock, this is a great option to experience Lubbock’s culture.

As you begin your drive to the 806, take in the vast landscape that lines the highways. You will know you have arrived as the skies turn to delicate shades of pink and orange in the creation of a breathtaking West Texas sunset. From a glass of wine to the scenic views, there is plenty to look forward to during your future stay in the “Hub City.” Plan your road trip today!
