Texas Tech is coming off the most successful season in school history, and I couldn’t be more excited to cheer on the Lady Raiders during their 2014 campaign.
Armed with a stifling defense and a goal hungry set of forwards, the Lady Raiders tallied a school record 18 victories and made their second straight NCAA tournament appearance before falling one goal short to their old Big 12 nemesis, Texas A&M, in a penalty kick shootout. Despite the heartbreaking loss in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, the team finished with an 18-2-3 record and earned the right to be considered one of the best teams in the country.
This year is shaping up to be even sweeter than the last with the inclusion of solid recruits and seven returning starters. If you’re looking for someone that has an eye for the back of the net, look no further than Janine Beckie. Beckie recently returned from the Under 20 Women’s World Cup as a member of the Canadian squad that fell to Germany in the quarterfinals. Beckie is calm and collected on the ball, but she isn’t afraid to take on defenders and be opportunistic when she’s facing the net. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on number 12 when she takes the field.
For those of you that have never been to a match at the John B. Walker Soccer Complex, you are missing out! This year’s atmosphere will probably scream up a few decibels after last year’s success. The Lady Raiders will showcase their talents during 10 home games this year, including marquee games against UC Riverside, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor. You can find a complete look at this year’s schedule here.
For the love of the beautiful game, I encourage you to bring your passion and your spirit this season as we cheer on the Lady Raiders at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Wreck ‘Em Tech!
