Freshman Year 101

We love our interns! They’re hip, they’re smart and there is nobody else in our office that remembers what it was like to be a freshman more than them. Today they’re leading the lesson plan on how to freshman. Here are their top 10 tips they wish they had been told before they began freshmen year.

  1. Venture off campus for food.
Lubbock has TONS of awesome local restaurants to enjoy like West Crust, J&B, and Spankys. Break away from the typical chain restaurant you can go to in your hometown.
  2. Budget, Budget, Budget!
Learning how to budget your money on your own is not the easiest thing, but you will so glad you learned now rather than later. Make a budget for things like food, fun, books and savings.
  3. Be a part of something.
Getting involved will open up many opportunities for you. Whether it’s an on-campus organization, foundation or religious organization, go out and make new friends. You never know whom you will meet (or dance with).
  4. Go to class.
    Too Cool For School
We know it’s cliché, but go to class and memorize your professor’s office hours. Creating a good relationship with your professors could come in handy one day.
  5. Explore.
There are so many fun things to do here in Lubbock. Go with your roommate and new friends to the First Friday Art Trail or the Downtown Farmer’s Market. You can always go get a taste of Lubbock at the Buddy Holly Center or the Stars and Stripes Drive-In.
  6. Find your classes early.
Go explore your new home and find your classes before the first day. This will make your first day of college much less stressful and save you from getting lost. Texas Tech Map. LCU Map.
  7. Check out other majors.
Take classes outside of your major, and don’t be afraid of changing your mind. Part of college is finding a career path that you truly love.
  8. Get involved in game days.
There is so much school spirit surrounding Lubbock. Take advantage of the hype and excitement of Texas Tech football games. It’s an experience that is unlike anything else.
  9. Live Music.
There is always live music in Lubbock. Whether it be a country concert at the Lone star Amphitheater or a relaxing night of music at the park, grab some friends and discover some new music. Lubbock Music Live has got you covered.
  10. Take LOTS of pictures.
Freshman year is one you’ll never forget, so take as many pictures as you can. It will be over before you know it, and you will want to be able to look back at all the memories you made.

We can’t wait to see you around town and don’t forget to enjoy your freshman year!
