There’s something so fantastic to me about a coffee shop taking the place of a gas station and serving up a beverage that fuels many mornings across America. Here you’ll find a traditional coffee shop menu brimming with standbys such as cafe lattes, espresso, frappuccinos and cappuccinos, but what truly sets Undergrounds apart is the ability to customize just about any beverage you’d like. Banana nut coffee? Sure. Candy in your frappuccino? Why not? (We tried ours with peanut butter cups. Delicious.)
Undergrounds brews their organic beans to perfection, but this local favorite has so much more than just coffee. All their teas, sodas and lemonade can be supercharged with flavors both traditional like strawberry, lemon or peach or a bit more adventurous options like cotton candy, Skittle or bubblegum. One of their most popular combinations? A coconut creme Dr Pepper.
Whether you favor a sweet or savory breakfast, you can find something in the Undergrounds pastry case to suit your fancy. On our barista’s recommendation, we nabbed the very last green chile roll that was everything I love about savory breakfasts rolled (literally) into one. Picture this: sausage, wrapped in a pastry, topped with green chile and bacon and a sticky bun with an irresistible brown sugar glaze. Exceptional!
As we sat sipping and sampling, business steadily increased as customers came in for their afternoon pick-me-up, ordering up Red Bulls that were just as customizable as the rest of the drink menu. Try your energy drink with blue curaçao and orange juice or what our barista told us is called “The Kingsbury” – Red Bull with added mixed berry flavor. The options are truly endless. Be it tiramisu coffee, strawberry tea, a tricked out Red Bull or a dry cappuccino, next time you need your caffeine fix, venture down 34th and make a pit stop at Undergrounds.
