Opening just three years ago, the Funky Door (for short) is already a Lubbock hot spot when it comes to good wine and good food. Owner Carrie Britton has a passion for all of the above, and together with her family, she embarked on this successful and wildly popular “Hub City” restaurant. Known for the wine, the Funky Door offers the only enomatic wine dispenser in town. This makes tastings unique and fun. Just ask your waiter for a card to go with the dispenser (with as much money as you wish) and taste away!
You might be curious where Carrie came up with the name “The Funky Door.” Originally, the restaurant was set to open in downtown Lubbock at a place that actually had a “funky” door at the entrance. When plans changed and the restaurant took its current place at 6015 82nd St., Carrie decided to stick with the same name and had a “funky” door designed and created.
Upon walking into the space, you’re immediately hit with comfort and class. They like to call themselves “upscale, but not uptight.” And that’s truly the experience you’ll have as you glance around the walls at local artwork (all for sale), enjoy wine from the enomatic wine dispenser or dine on the popular fondue choices.
Speaking of fondue, that’s the first item we tired. It’s the perfect appetizer or happy hour treat to pair with some wine. The restaurant offers a variety of fondues, but we chose the Funky Door Fondue, which is a blend of smoked gouda and caraway cheese. Paired with French bread croutons, it was a great choice!
Next up on the menu was the Ahi Tuna Salad. If you’re a tuna lover, or even just a salad lover, this is a must-try! Picture this: delicately pan-seared Ahi tuna over a bed of fresh seasonal greens, mandarin oranges, crunchy Asian noodles, sprinkled with sesame seeds and drizzled with tangy Asian vinaigrette dressing. We chose from the lunch menu for our main entrée and decided on the Funky Door Chicken Sandwich (also offered as a dinner entrée minus the “sandwich”). Talk about perfectly marinated chicken! This popular dish is marinated in tequila and lime with green chili and pepperjack sauce. Yum!
With music at least five nights a week, you’ll be savoring your cuisine with tunes. The Funky Door also offers a variety of events throughout the year. One of their most famous being the summer passport series. Each week, the restaurant highlights a different region from around the world for their wine and food. You might even learn a thing or two from owner Carrie, as she’s currently working on her second-level sommelier license. Be sure to check their website regularly for monthly and weekly events.
