It’s officially autumn on the South Plains, which means it’s fair season! Head east to the Panhandle South Plains Fairgrounds to join with the community in enjoying one of our favorite weeks of the season. From petting zoos and rollercoasters to fair games and live acts, the fair is an experience for the whole family.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the greasy, hearty reasons we all favor nights waiting in line under the neon lights. Fried cheese, turkey legs and craft lemonades are just the beginning when indulging in the culinary culture of West Texas. Known as the second largest fair in Texas, the South Plains Fair has endless comfort food options. So, foodies, this week is for you! Look below for a guide to all the mouth-watering fare that has fair-goers coming back for more each year.
Whether you’re a sweet tooth or savory type, you’ll be in fair-food heaven! We on the South Plains community don’t mess around when it comes to serving fried… everything. My first stop is always the tater-booth. If you’re a fan of potatoes, specifically in French fries fashion, these fried ribboned taters are a great start.
Now it’s time to talk about the drink that has everybody raving – hand-squeezed and hand-shaken fresh strawberry lemonade made by Lubbock Impact. You know it’s good when you can’t find the end of the line! Try a taste of this classic sweet drink that packs a “Hub City” twist. Trust me when I say each sip gets better and better.
We still have a long list of things to try so I hope you’re hungry! This next stop is for all of the corn fanatics. If you are unfamiliar with Mexican corn, let me paint the picture for you. Hot, fresh, sweet corn with mayonnaise, chili lime seasoning, and cotija cheese sprinkled on top. Is your mouth watering yet?
If you think that’s too corny, wait until you try what’s next on our list. Our traditional fair “corny dog” cannot be beat. However, this is no average corn dog. This long-time classic is one foot of deep-fried deliciousness. Don’t worry, I won’t judge you even if you decide not to share it with a friend.
If you want one to indulge into an iconic eat, make your way to the turkey leg stand. Your nose will lead the way as it’s hard to miss the aroma of 500 turkey legs being roasted to perfection. These delicious turkey legs are a carnivore’s dream.
Calling all with a sweet tooth! Try not to go into a sugar coma by simply smelling the treats. Between fried pies, funnel cakes and fried oreos, you won’t know what to choose. I cannot go to the fair without getting my hands on a fried Milky Way candy bar.
