The Museum of Texas Tech University is TTU’s hub of knowledge and culture. The museum has free admission and over 4,000 square feet of galleries. With six diverse collections of anthropology, art, clothing and textiles, history, paleontology and natural history, the museum welcomes visitors of all ages. 

Established in 1929, the museum has nine permanent galleries showcasing art from various time periods and ages. Seven additional galleries feature a mix of exhibitions of the museum’s collections and displays from across the globe.

Here are 5 reasons why you should add the Texas Tech Museum to your itinerary:

1. The Moody Planetarium’s Star Gazing Experience

The Moody Planetarium offers a blend of education and entertainment for its audiences. This planetarium produces shows featuring the study of stars, constellations, dark matter, black holes and planets of the solar system. The planetarium choreographs a laser light show providing an immersive musical experience to the tune of Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Metallica and various country artists. The Moody Planetarium is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with admission available to purchase. 

2. Lubbock Lake Landmark

The Lubbock Lake Landmark is an archaeological and natural history preserve offering exhibitions, public programs and hiking trails spanning 4.5 miles. This landmark is free for the public and makes a great outdoor activity for all ages. Also home to permanent exhibits, visitors can view locally sourced artifacts while learning about West Texas’ rich history. 

3. The Permanent Exhibitions

The museum offers an array of permanent exhibitions. The Changing World Gallery features an Omni globe, dinosaur displays and a variety of fossilized objects! View local biodiversity at the Llano Estacado exhibit, exploring the seven major habitats. The Diamond M Collection encompasses over 350 works of art available for viewing. 

4. The Niche Rotating Exhibits

The TTU Museum is home to a multitude of short-term exhibits. The ever-changing exhibits are a great way to experience new cultures and knowledge at various points during the year. 

The latest exhibition is curated by Dr. Marian Ann Montgomery, From Rhinestones to Denim: Fashions Worn by Ladies of the Saddle. This display highlights the museum’s female riding collection with diverse garments portraying how horseback riding has changed over 150 years. Take advantage of this temporary exhibit before April 17th, 2024!

5. Photos are Welcome

The TTU Museum encourages still photos and videos to capture memories. Pencil sketching is also allowed. The front desk is equipped with a visitor guide to answer any questions.
