Set for September 5 through 8, the 25th Annual National Cowboy Symposium & Celebration is an opportunity for cowboys, cowgirls and yes, even us city slickers, to come together and celebrate the simple things in life.
Visitors can expect to do a little Texas time traveling while browsing through the chuck wagons. Here’s a hint: don’t be afraid to ask questions while you’re out and about. The “settlers” in period clothing are all more than happy to tell you about what makes their chuck wagon the best in the West. If you play your cards straight you can sample some amazing chicken fried steak and other goodies that have been perfected at the famous chuck wagon cook-off. Click here to see what we’re talking about Chuck Wagons.
But that’s not all. For less than the price you would pay for a night out at the movies, families are encouraged to come out and spend a day or even a weekend immersing themselves in the cowboy culture. Some of the activities you’ll find include cowboy poetry, roping demonstrations, live music and of course tours of the famous chuck wagons. This year, kids will be able to work with the chuck wagon settlers during the cook-off. If cooking is not their thing, don’t worry, they can sign up for poetry, story and photography contests.
And I haven’t even talked about the shopping! The entire Lubbock Memorial Civic Center will be filled with artisans from all over the region. Use this opportunity to mix and mingle and find one-of-a-kind pieces that you can’t find in any department store.
One of the most highly anticipated events features one of the best horsemen in the business, Craig Cameron. After stumbling upon an article about Craig, it’s crystal clear why he is so good at what he does. Whether you’re a die-hard cowboy or a city slicker like me, his show on Saturday will be well worth the price of admission.
And if you’re feeling lucky, you can win a trip to Lubbock, which will include a two-night stay at a local hotel and tickets to the event. Here’s how you can win.
And for one final note, if you don’t leave the 25th Annual National Cowboy Symposium & Celebration wanting to build your own chuck wagon, write poetry to your favorite cowgirl or become a cowboy and ride off into the sunset; I’ll kiss a horse. Seriously. I’m that confident that you’ll enjoy yourself. And while I’m no stranger to the equine family, I have a feeling I won’t be puckering up any time soon.
