Marc Sijan, a Milwaukee artist, has carefully studied and modeled the human form for more then 20 years. Since his days as an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, he has become totally immersed in the human form as a subject. Although Marc Sijan’s creative talents are extensive he is best known for his ultra-realistic sculpture. Sijan’s sculptures are "homages to humanity’s fascination with its own forms -- a fascination which has compelled artists throughout the millennia to mirror life in virtually every medium." Sijan’s figures are incredibly lifelike, sensuous and graceful. In fact, they are so life like, they seem always on the verge of movement, a mere instant away from action. The pores in the skin, the tiny hairs, and veins; even the bald spots, the blemishes, the individual shapes of the faces that make human beings so similar, yet so unique. These are the essence of what makes Marc Sijan’s work so arresting. The exhibition features five full size figures, two torsos, and 10 wall mounted portraits. Admission and parking is FREE! The 11th annual Summer Youth Classes will be held July 12 to 16 at the National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC) on the Texas Tech campus, 3121 Fourth Street, Lubbock. Classes are designed for elementary students in Kindergarten through 5th grades. Courses, each lasting 1 hour and 50 minutes, are scheduled in two blocks of time. The first is 8:30 to 10:20 a.m., and the second goes from 10:40 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students may sign up for one or two classes at a cost of $25 per course. Those who take two classes will be able to stay the whole morning and will have a snack in between their two classes. Camp T-shirts are available for $12 in advance or $14 after classes start. “The summer program provides a fun, learning environment for young students in age-appropriate classes set among the Center’s historic structures,� said Emily Arellano, education director at the NRHC. “Because many students learn by doing, hands-on activities are planned for each day of the program. This is an excellent opportunity for children to see what life was like for the early settlers and ranchers of this area while also having fun.� Class space is limited and pre-registration is required. “Classes will fill up, so register early,� Arellano said. chiCrits, a local women’s artists collaborative is composed of the following members; Shannon Cannings, Kara Donatelli, Tricia Earl, Stacy Elko, and Johanna Feminear. The group formed in 2001 and has been an active forum for critiquing current works and trends within the art community. The artists of chiCrits are prolific and work in a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, video, and collage. This mixed media group show explores various subject matters ranging from the meticulous observations of Americana, consumerism, and the plastic veneer; colorful, prosperous conceptual domestic forms; exploration into transformative place; impact of social disorder related to everyday life; and approaches to identity, culture and difference through transient spaces. The events include men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Once again, there is a junior tournament for players age 18 and under. The junior tournament is singles only. Due to the large number of entries, adult matches will begin on Friday, July 23. Also on Friday, players are invited to The Falls Tennis & Athletic Club for check-in, door prizes, and dinner. A casual dinner will be donated by Freebirds World Burrito. Play continues on Saturday and Sunday, and the weekend of events closes with an awards ceremony at 6 p.m., Sunday at The Falls. Awards will be presented for first, second, and third place winners in both the adult and junior tournaments and refreshments will be served. The tournament director is once again Amanda Knight and the tournament referee is Clifford Hopping. The entry fee, which includes invitations for two to the Friday evening events and a tournament t-shirt is $30 per person and $15 for the second event for adults, and $25 per person for the juniors. The entry and payment deadline is Tuesday, July 20. A $5 fee will be charged to anyone paying after the deadline. The camp is designed for children who attended Aviation Boot Camp I or Aviation Boot Camp in 2009.
