Lubbock Community Theatre presents: Harvey
May 3-5 2012

When Elwood P. Dowd starts to introduce his imaginary friend, Harvey, a six-and-a-half foot rabbit, to guests at a society party, his sister, Veta, has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter, Myrtle Mae, and their family from future embarrassment. Problems arise, however, when Veta herself is mistakenly assumed to be on the verge of lunacy when she explains to doctors that years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey also! The doctors commit Veta instead of Elwood, but when the truth comes out, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. When he shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood’s delusion has had a strange influence on more than one of the doctors. Only at the end does Veta realize that maybe Harvey isn’t so bad after all.

South Plains Astronomy Club and TTU Museum host Eclipse Party
May 20th 2012

On May 20, 2012, the Moon will pass directly between the Sun and Earth, eclipsing the Sun. The eclipse starts in China, moves north to Japan, and the open ocean below the Aleutian Islands, the south again to the Pacific northwest, and finally ending in Lubbock. The Sun will set just after the Moon touches the far side of the Sun, so we will see the maximum annular eclipse, but will miss the second half of partial eclipse.

The South Plains Astronomy Club and the Texas Tech Museum will provide a public viewing party at the Lubbock Lake Landmark on the afternoon of May 20th starting at 6:30pm.
We will have space for photographers and astronomers not interested in public outreach.

This eclipse is not safe to view with the naked eye because the Moon does not cover the Sun’s surface completely and the remaining portion is bright enough to damage the naked eye. However, you can use a #14 welder’s glass or “eclipse glasses” (Mylar solar filtered cardboard glasses) to safely view the eclipse. The club will have inexpensive eclipse glasses for sale at a modest price at the event.

More information on the eclipse and event is available at; http://southplainsastronomy.org
